Across Victoria, Neighbourhood Houses quietly change lives every day.
They are places where people come to learn something new, find friendship, volunteer, create, share food, build confidence, get back into work, connect with their culture or simply find somewhere they feel they belong. They support people through difficult times, bring generations together and help communities become stronger and more connected.
But the true impact of neighbourhood houses can be difficult to capture in statistics alone.
Grassroots Stories is a storytelling project exploring the people behind Victoria’s neighbourhood houses and the many different ways these small, local places make a difference.
The idea is simple: invite neighbourhood houses to nominate people whose experiences help tell the story of why their house matters. Through interviews, photographs and personal storytelling, these individual stories could be collected into an accessible book celebrating the extraordinary diversity of the neighbourhood house sector.
The stories might be about lifelong learning, friendship, volunteering, creativity, ageing, young people, disability, employment, culture, community leadership, overcoming loneliness or finding a place to belong. Some may be extraordinary. Others may be beautifully ordinary — the kinds of small human stories that happen in neighbourhood houses every day.
Together, they can tell a much bigger story.
The long-term vision is to create a beautifully designed collection that can be shared with communities, government, funders, media and decision-makers — helping people outside the sector understand not only what neighbourhood houses do, but why they matter.
It could also create something lasting: a record of this grassroots movement and the people who have shaped it, while giving communities an opportunity to celebrate their stories and have their voices heard.
Because sometimes the best way to understand the value of a neighbourhood house is simply to meet the people who walk through its doors.
