Some babies take forty weeks to be born but our baby came after just twenty-seven weeks! I think our baby is going to be fast at everything!
This illustrated book explores a child's experience of having a premature baby brother or sister in a neonatal ward (NICU). Different from other books on the topic, it uses creativity and humour, such as the baby being in a rocket ship (isolette) or an underwater submarine and wearing a snorkel (oxygen tubes). By helping siblings and other family members to tap into their imagination, this book aims to help families have conversations, making what can be an already very tough time in a sibling's life more manageable.
"No matter how much time passes, the emotional rollercoaster of a premature baby and NICU remains fresh. The highs and lows, the milestones and fears – they all continue to hover just below the surface of the chaos of everyday life. This book is beautiful. There are next to no resources for siblings of premature babies. As a mum of two ex-NICU girls and one NICU boy – thank you for changing this."
Kate Stagg, NICU mum
"A beautiful story and a fantastic resource for families of siblings following their baby brother or sisters’ journey through NICU. Through the innocent eyes of children the roller coaster of a journey through NICU unfolds..."
Amy Farrelly, Acting Nurse Unit Manager NICU,
Mercy Hospital for Women
